Day 6 - Hike Day 2 - Lake Kathleen to Lake Plateau

We woke up after a good night's sleep on the shores of Lake Kathleen and broke camp for the second day of hiking.  We ate breakfast a little farther down the trail so as not to leave any food smells in the camping location.

Here is Aaron & Larry getting ready to hit the trail for Day 2 of hiking.

Lucas, Casey & Trent are filling water bottles from the lake using the hand-pump filter.

Eli, Aaron & Urvish having a deep conversation about walking staves.

Casey ready for a long hike or deer hunting.

John topping off his water bottle from the base camp filter bag.

Lucas trying to fit one more thing into his pack.

Aaron is loaded and ready for the day.

Our trail today leads us on the hardest part of the entire trip from
Lake Kathleen to the Lakes Plateau along the Rainbow Creek Trail.

No more bridges!
We have to find our own way across raging mountain rivers that are swollen with snow run-off.
Barry tries to find a better crossing that isn't quite working out.

So much for water proof boots!  With Casey leading the way, Lucas and Wyatt challenge the river.

Aaron and the rest of the troop decide to just
embrace the ice water and enjoy water-logged boots.

After the river crossing, Eli demonstrates his new method for drying his wool socks.

The trail gets steeper and harder....Rest breaks become a bit more frequent!

We finally reach a meadow where the walking is flat and the snow is close.
Here John poses in the valley.

Aaron takes a break in the valley.

More wading through the icy water....will our boots ever be dry again?

We finally make it to the Lake Plateau and the Rainbow Lakes.

The sky seems very close at 9600 feet above sea level.

Eli takes a break while Barry & Tim scout for a campsite.  Yes, that is snow just across the lake.

Taking a well deserved break!

When we reached our campsite we found a pile of snow in the middle of it.
So, of course, Casey had to make a snow angel...and Wyatt had to help in his own way.

And now for Larry's daily update!
