Day 2 - Pilot Knob to Horse Thief Lake, SD

This morning we all got up at 4:30am, broke camp, had a quick breakfast, and were on the road by 6:00am.  Wow!  Today we had a long day of driving ahead of us as our destination was Horse Thief Lake Campgrounds in the Black Hills.

One of the things we noticed along our way were large windmill farms.  There were scores of them along the Interstate.

We also made a pitstop at one of the exits and found that you not only could by gas and a Big Mac, but you could also get your car washed and gamble some of your vacation money away all in one convenient location...all in South Dakota!!!

We had lunch at the White Lake Rest Area on I-90 and found the Wayside Chapel just behind the rest area property.  Inside there were a few 2-person pews, and alter with Bible, and flyers about the church that sponsors the chapel.

We also crossed the Missouri River at Chamberland SD, which is a large reservoir that follows the river.

We eventually arrived at our destination, Horse Thief Lake Campgrounds, which is just a few miles from Mt Rushmore.  We were close enough to see the tourist helicopters flying overhead.

The campsites were designed for RVs and campers, and not for scout troops with lots of tents, but we managed to improvise and find enough places for all of our tents.

Tim even managed to find his own little corner of the world.

Our cooks made a great meal of spaghetti that night!

A great sunset to a great day.  Aaron & Larry posed in front of Horse Thief Lake.

Everything was going well until....the bus started making a strange sound in the engine.  Little did we know at that time, but a secondary theme was developing for the Troop 3 high adventure trip!

And now for an update of Day #2.....Here's Larry!
